This humble little statue can be found in Ostia Antica, Italy. This is a large archeological site, that was the location of the harbour city of ancient Rome. Because of financial problems, the Italian government hasn’t gotten around to excavating most of the site, and only a small part of the structures that have been excavated are visited by the larger public. Some of the most beautiful parts of the city, like this small statue, standing in it’s original form in it’s original temple, are only accesible after some climbing, getting lost and scraping your palms and knees.
However, it was almost liberating to see this, after days spent in carfully guarded museums, to see something so authentically ancient and breathtakingly beautiful. (As is the story of Amor and Psyche by Apuleius.)
